Known locally for her work with Chamber Music Wilmington as Artist in Residence and Artistic Director, Ms. McKenzie has established herself as a dynamic performer and inspiring teacher in the United States and abroad.
Barbara has given master classes in many of the world’s leading conservatories including the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Weimar and the Mannes School in New York.
She’s been praised for her penetrating musical understanding, and the ease with which she summarizes and simplifies technical and musical difficulties for her students. Several of her students have succeeded in state and national competitions. Many have entered Ivy League schools and Conservatories both in the US and Abroad.
Ms. McKenzie has a Bachelor and Master of Music Degree from the Peabody Conservatory/Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where she studied with Leon Fleisher and Walter Hautzig. Her post graduate studies include piano and chamber music in Vienna at the Franz Schubert Institute, the Hochschule fuer Musik in Detmold, Germany, and also in Paris with the last living student of Alfred Cortot. She integrates the best of the French, German and Russian schools of playing and teaches piano through relaxation to increase confidence, ease of playing and prevent injury.
