Leland

Brunswick County is the 14th fastest growing county in the nation and, with 19 municipalities, has more municipalities than any other North Carolina county.

Leland, just across the Cape Fear River from Wilmington and known as the Gateway to Brunswick County, is one of the fastest growing communities in southeastern North Carolina. In 2004 the town doubled its size by annexing Brunswick Forest, a 4,900-acre tract. A U.S. Highway 17 bypass is planned, which will allow access to the town directly from Interstate 40 without the need to travel through Wilmington. These changes are expected to swell the population from its current 13,527, the largest in the county, to more than 20,000. New developments have provided newcomers with quality housing choices. With the addition of a Wal-Mart and numerous other retail facilities, locals no longer have to journey across the bridge for their shopping needs. This thriving suburb promises to continue expansion, raising land value and creating a "bedroom community" for neighboring Wilmington.

A collaborative effort by town officials and employees, citizens and a professional team of planners and designers have developed a master plan for the town to establish a framework for future land use and development. This plan received an honorable mention outstanding plan award at the N.C. Chapter of the American Planning Association's 51st annual conference held in Raleigh in the fall of 2008. This plan will be used in concert with the Leland Connector Street Plan as well as other efforts including a bicycle master plan, an open space and recreation plan, and the CAMA Land Use Plan Update to maintain a high quality of life for residents as the town continues to grow.

There are several golf courses in the area and shopping can be had at the Waterford Business Center, the Villages at Brunswick Forest and others located along highway 17. Housing developments include Waterford of the Carolinas, Magnolia Greens, The Bluff on the Cape Fear, Palm Cove of the Carolinas, Lanville Trace, Snee Farm, Hunter's Ridge, Rices Creek Estate, Creeks Edge, Brunswick River Estates, Brunswick Forest, Westgate and Wisteria Place, a "green" neighborhood. Single-family homes in the Leland/Belville area may range from $55,000 to over $650,000; lots from $10,000 to $130,000.
