Children ages 7 to 17 can learn golf skills and life skills by becoming members of The First Tee Brunswick County. The Mission Statement of the First Tee reads: "To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf." School Day Programs are held in all Brunswick County Elementary Schools as part of their regular curriculum. In addition, children in 4-5 grades from all 10 Brunswick county Schools are bussed to Cinghiale Creek (the home course of The First Tee), to Magnolia Greens in Leland, and to the Players Club at St. James. Members of The First Tee participate in after-school and Saturday programs at Cinghiale Creek and play in competitive tournaments around the county and elsewhere.
The 29-acre Cinghiale Creek facility and the McLamb Tom Watson Designed Par 3 course inside the double ended driving range, located in Shallotte, also include a Learning Center with locker rooms, classrooms, offices, indoor putting green and a golf simulator. Cinghiale Creek has two full size practice putting greens, three full sized golf holes with multiple tees, a Roy Pace Par 3 Course, and a Tom Watson Signature Practice Facility which includes a double-ended driving range and a Par 3 course. In 2013, the 9,000 square foot Carolinas Leadership Academy opened for youth ages 14-17 to learn Leadership skills. It includes 50-bed overnight facility for youth in Brunswick County and the region.
Volunteers are needed to fill the positions of Lead Coaches and Assistant Coaches, office and clerical help, buildings and grounds team and in many other areas. Please contact Coach Terry Mauney, PGA Program Director (910) 754-5288, or visit the website to learn more about volunteer opportunities.
